Young Girls Made To Feel Fat

Published by tglisman at 11:45 am under just another day Edit This

It is so sad that young girls are constantly made to feel they are fat if they are not skin and bones.  They see the diet ads on TV, the models, the actors on TV and in the movies.  If they read magazines they will read how such and such has gained weight and is now fat. For example: Eva Longoria Parker gained ten pounds. She is then besieged by reports that she is pregnant.  When she gained the weight she went from a 00 to a 0.  She then made the statement that “I am not pregnant, I’m just fat”.  A size 0 is fat?  This is a bad message for young girls who read this magazine article unless they read the small reality check at the bottom.  With all the young girls and women in the world with eating disorders the time has come for people to speak out and complain loud and clear that being too skinny is not beautiful.  I think a sweet smile and a healthy body are much more beautiful than bones showing through the skin.

It has even affected one of my granddaughters. She lives in another state so I do not get to see her very often.  I keep up with her through letters, calls, email, and her Moms My space.  After looking at some new photos of her I made the comment she was getting so big. She stiffly asked if that was a compliment.  She also wanted to know if I meant big or tall.  I thought it was the same thing when talking to an eleven year old but it’s not now.  This kid is skinny and is worried about being fat.  Another granddaughter was called fat many times at school.  With the help of family she is now more worried about eating healthy foods and getting exercise each day.  She is not fat and has never been fat.  I hope that one day they will realize that even when a person is over weight they are still the same person they would be if they were slim.  Beauty takes many forms.

You are so right! It started when I was in grade school 20 + years ago. It has gotten much worse. It’s one thing if a girl/woman is naturally skinny or is fit, but skin and bones is not healthy and it’s a horrible image for girls to see as not only accepted, but ideal.

They have been talking about the too skinny actresses on tv lately, and I am glad. Girls don’t realize this is not the ideal.

I learned a long time ago from personal experience to not focus on a child’s weight. Instead of saying something about appearance, I say how smart or sweet. If I do same something about appearance, I always tell a child they look wonderful.

I saw a onesie not long ago for a baby that says “Does this make my butt look big?” It made me FURIOUS! To start that crap with an infant is too much!

I had a friend get upset because I grabbed her 1 year old daughters thigh and said how I love chubby baby thighs….it’s a baby. They are supposed to be chubby. It’s healthy.

    Sigh….
